MEMORY ASSESSMENT CENTERS

Recognizing the need to coordinate and share information about available services for diagnosis and treatment, AlzPossible partners identified the following interdisciplinary memory assessment centers in Virginia and surrounding states and Washington, D.C.

The centers were surveyed in the spring of 2014 based on the criteria outlined below.  Answers to the survey have been provided directly from center staff.

It is the full intention of the AlzPossible partners to ensure this information is updated at least annually. AlzPossible partners recommend that you contact an interested center to verity that the information is still up-to-date and accurate.

If you know of additional interdisciplinary memory assessment centers that should be surveyed for potential inclusion, please contact George Worthington. The National Institute on Aging maintains a list of nationally recognized Alzheimer’s Disease Centers, which focus on translating research on dementia into practice with many offering diagnostic and treatment services.

Is there anything important about your clinic that we neglected to ask about? The Memory Clinic is composed of residents, case manager, and board certified geriatric psychiatrist. All other services marked above are available to us but are not necessarily a part of the multi-disciplinary team for this specific clinic (as in we refer to them within WVU Healthcare). We participate in the WVU Alzheimer’s Registry and report all WV residents diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s. s there anything important about your clinic that we neglected to ask about? Our clinic has been in existence about 20 years. Our physician and Director of Neuropsychiatry, Dr. Nicole Absar, MD, is a Diplomate in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry. Dr. Absar has many years of experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of persons with dementia. We work in conjunction with community physicians- geriatricians, internal medicine and other specialists. Often patients are referred from a neurologist or other specialists for a more precise and exact diagnosis as well as management of afflicted persons and support for their caregivers/families.At this time we only accept Medicare and BCBS as payment. Other insurances may require a prior authorization or the person can pay for services provided that are out of their network. A referral is not needed but our process of accepting new patients involves obtaining current medical information from their community physician. This could include 2 years of labs, scan or imaging reports, hospital discharge summaries, and pertinent notes from their primary physician indicating a memory concern. This information is then reviewed by our team to ensure our ability to meet the needs of the potential patient.
